Born and raised in Owensboro, Brad Mills is bringing a new chapter to local archery enthusiasts with Triple B Archery and Outdoors, set to open in mid-May.

Located at the former location of Sportsman Headquarters on 7th Street and Crabtree Avenue, Mills said he aims to continue the outdoorsman community hub atmosphere that is synonymous with the spot.

Mills, an Owensboro Catholic High School alum, credits his deep-rooted passion for the outdoors to his father, who introduced him to hunting at a young age. By 12, he was already proficient in bow hunting, a skill that has shaped his life and career.

“I’ve hunted my whole life. It’s my favorite thing to do — being outside on my farm and fishing,” Mills said.

His mentor, Tracy Heath, operated Sportsman Headquarters for 35 years, creating a gathering place for hunting and fishing aficionados.

“It was like a barbershop; people would just come to hang out,” Mills said.

Mills said Heath not only provided a space for community, but also played a crucial role in his own professional growth, having worked closely together for nearly a decade.

“Without Tracy, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” Mills said.”He taught me the ins and outs of the business, and from there, I developed my own techniques.”

Triple B Archery and Outdoors will be a retail store and service shop.

Mills said he is particularly excited about the prospect of fostering a new generation of archers, citing the growing popularity of school archery programs in Owensboro as a key motivator for opening his shop.

“Archery is for everyone,” he said. “It’s not limited to a specific type of person. It’s enjoyable, accessible, and something you can do your whole life.”

His shop aims to be inclusive, providing gear and guidance for anyone interested in the sport, from children to seniors.

Mills already has plans to relocate to a new building more centralized in Owensboro toward the end of the year or early in 2025.
