Brescia University students are getting the chance to see their own screenplays come to life with the help of the newly established production group Love and Horror Productions.
The company was created by Brescia University English professor Jamie Alvey alongside friends Emily Fabrizio and Callie Kirk in 2023 after Alvey made a feature-length movie, titled “Bystanders.”
Alvey said that as a writer and actor in the movie, she found the process to be not as difficult as she imagined. With her newly strengthened passion she asked for Fabrizio, a Brescia alum, to join as an Executive Producer, and Kirk became a producer for a new film.
From there, Alvey’s screenwriting class agreed to take on a practicum-like experience for their projects.
“I thought ‘I could do this on an even smaller scale.’ I thought it would be fun to bring the students into it because they had already shown an interest in screenwriting and learning different forms of creative writing, and that really just kind of all came together,” Alvey said.
Alvey said this opportunity allows her students to learn about screenwriting while actively pursuing their desired genres, which range from romance to psychological thrillers.
In addition to writing their own scripts, Alvey said the students will also learn how to revise as they will be editing her newest screenplay, “Your Husband Was a Good Man.”
“I’ve kind of instilled in them that writing is very solitary until it’s not. Then, you have to collaborate with people. So I think they’re really seeing the collaborative side of writing this way,” Alvey said.
Once the students’ scripts have been written and revised, Alvey said the hope is to turn some of them into short films through the production group later this year.
“It’s been a whirlwind, but they are super excited, and I am happy to accommodate them in any way possible. It’s nice to see them have that just kind of fervor for writing and creativity,” Alvey said.
In the meantime, Alvey said she is preparing for the release of “Bystanders.” More details on its release will follow in the coming months.
