Grace-Based Films features scenes from Owensboro in its latest documentary, “A Case for Love,” which explores the idea that the personal practice of unselfish love has the power to transform the world. The film will air in more than 1,000 theaters nationwide, including Owensboro’s Malco, at 7 p.m. tonight — though it’s only a 1-night showing.

Brian Ide, president and CEO of the Hollywood-based nonprofit, directed the film. His wife Karen is from Owensboro. Brian is the son of an ELCA Lutheran pastor-father and devout Catholic mother, while Karen comes from an Episcopal family. The two enjoy and admire stories focusing on what unites people rather than divides them.

“Our mission is to tell compelling stories, through film, that meet 21st-century audiences exactly where they are in the messiness of life, emboldening them in their belovedness by bringing Jesus’s message alive, and reminding them that none of us are alone,” a release from the film company reads.

The release says the documentary examines the question of whether or not love, specifically unselfish love, is the solution to the extreme societal and political divide facing the U.S. It spans 7 chapters and highlights individuals from all walks of life.

The film crew stopped at Wonder Whip in Owensboro in May of 2021 and interviewed a customer, an employee, and the owner Seth Woodward.

“It’s been 2 and a half years, so I thought it was ancient history,” Woodward said. “I’m not sure how much the restaurant will be featured, but we appreciate the cameo opportunity.”

Woodward said the Grace-Based team told him yesterday the Malco in Owensboro has nearly sold out of its tickets.

“It’s rare for a documentary or low-budget film to make it to theaters,” he said. “It’s only a 1-day showing, so I hope everyone can get a ticket. This is good publicity for Owensboro and our restaurant. We just wanted to present ourselves well and add a little flavor to the film.”

The film team also traveled coast to coast, interviewing people of all ethnicities daily. They interviewed well-known figures including Pete Buttigieg, Al Roker, Sam Waterston, Jon Meacham, and Bishop Michael Curry.

“A Case for Love” marks Ide’s 5th film and his premier feature-length documentary.
