Owensboro Municipal Utilities is almost finished with the Fiber to the Homes initiative, as they now have more than 3,800 residential subscribers to the internet service.

Director of Telecommunications Chris Poynter said the plan is slated to be finished by the end of Fiscal Year 2024, with the remaining two sectors being neighborhoods primarily north of Parrish Avenue.

The next section they will focus on is Sub J, which is west of Frederica Street and north of Parrish Avenue, with some portions north of 9th and 4th streets.

“We’re trying to complete our expansion, and I’ll be very excited when we finally get this fibernet rollout all done,” Poynter said.

Poynter said OMU is also working closely with the City of Owensboro to optimize the network provided to the City.

Regarding corporate subscribers, Poynter said OMU saw an impact from the mall shutting down as some of those businesses used the service.

“There’s been a little bit of an impact from the mall being shut down, too, as that affected a few of our candidates, but the small business continues to grow,” Poynter said.
