Crews have been cleaning up the new Daviess County Middle School after a sprinkler failure caused flooding in parts of the building on Christmas Eve.
A flex hose on a sprinkler head failed in a vestibule to the courtyard and took out a few ceiling tiles in the process, according to DCPS Director of Maintenance David Shutt.
Shutt said that the issue caused damage to ceiling tiles in that area, three light fixtures, and some paint; however, for the most part, everything has been cleaned and repaired.
“It looked worse than what it came to be,” Shutt said.
The line failure triggered an alarm, Shutt said, and the Daviess County Fire Department responded immediately and was able to stop the downpour.
Water did come through to some classrooms, but no damage to tiles or classrooms occurred, Shutt said.
Cleanup began on Monday, and Shutt is confident school will be able to resume as scheduled on January 3, 2023.
“They could have school today,” he said. “There will be no delay. We handle water pretty well in schools.”
