Tim Lyons on Thursday was officially named the next General Manager for Owensboro Municipal Utilities, effective April 2. Lyons will replace Kevin Frizzell, who is retiring after 4 years in the position.
Lyons previously served as OMU’s Director of Delivery since 2013, and has worked with the organization since 2007. As Director of Delivery, Lyons oversaw water and electric distribution systems for the organization.
With over 25 years of experience in the electric utility business, Lyons said is excited to lead OMU as General Manager.
“It has been a pleasure to work with such dedicated, talented and skilled employees,” Lyons said. “As a team, we will continue to be local people providing quality, affordable and reliable local utility services.”
During Thursday’s meeting, OMU commissioners also approved Frizzell’s retirement date of Aug. 1. By the time his final day comes, he will have served 32 years at the organization.
Before serving as the GM, Frizzell was the Director of Production and served in numerous other positions throughout the organization.
“It’s been great working with the commission. I have to say I never applied for General Manager in hopes that I wouldn’t be able to do it,” Frizzell said. “… You guys are doing a great job and the employees here are the best — I’ve said that a lot and I really mean it. It’s just been just been a pleasure to lead.”
Between April and August, will be a transition period allowing Lyons to ease into the full duties of the position while phasing Frizzell out.
Commission Chair J.T. Fulkerson said that Lyons’s leadership abilities, dedication and focus on the customer-owners were major factors when it came to choosing Frizzell’s successor.
“A combination of 25 years of experience in the utility industry, knowledge of operating a public utility and proven leadership abilities makes him the ideal person to serve as our next general manager,” Fulkerson said.
