OPD: Juvenile facing weapon and theft charges; 2 other juveniles charged in relation to incident

A male juvenile is facing several charges following allegations that he fired a weapon and stole items from a vehicle before attempting to flee police, according to the Owensboro Police Department. Two other juveniles have also been charged in relation to the alleged theft. 

According to OPD, at approximately 10:54 p.m. Thursday officers responded to the 1700 block of Monarch Avenue for a firearm discharge. The victim advised he was shot at by a subject that he located stealing items from his vehicle. 

Multiple officers converged on the area and began a search for the suspect based on the victim’s description, according to OPD. Officers located a 16-year-old male juvenile matching the provided description on the property of a closed business. 

The suspect ran from officers before being taken into custody, according to reports. Officers recovered a stolen firearm from the suspect. 

The juvenile was charged with the following:

  • Wanton endangerment, first degree
  • Receiving stolen property (firearm)
  • Tampering with physical evidence
  • Fleeing or evading police, second degree
  • Possession of a handgun by a minor, first offense
  • Criminal trespassing second degree
  • Theft by unlawful taking – contents from a vehicle

He was lodged at the Warren Regional Juvenile Detention Center. 

Officers also identified two additional juveniles related to this investigation who were both charged with theft by unlawful taking – contents from a vehicle.
