A 52-year-old Henderson man was arrested early Wednesday morning after attempting to evade police and being found with suspected methamphetamine, according to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.

James Kanipe is facing the following charges for the incident:

  • Reckless driving
  • DUI (first offense)
  • Trafficking in a controlled substance, first degree (first offense, > or = 2 grams meth)
  • Fleeing/evading police, first degree (motor vehicle)
  • Drug paraphernalia, buy/possess
  • Tampering with physical evidence

According to DCSO, at approximately 3:20 a.m. deputies were notified of a reckless driver. A deputy observed the suspect vehicle on the Wendell Ford Expressway near Frederica Street. The deputy reported that the suspect vehicle was “swerving all over the roadway, was occupying both lanes of travel, and the suspect came to a complete stop in the middle of Wendell Ford Expressway causing a semi-truck to swerve around him to avoid striking him.”

According to DCSO, the deputy activated his emergency equipment but the suspect failed to stop his vehicle. The vehicle was eventually stopped by a motorist blocking him in and restricting his travel.

Through an investigation, the vehicle operator — identified as Kanipe — was arrested for suspected DUI. According to a release, deputies also located a large amount of loose, suspected methamphetamine”scattered all over the passenger side of the vehicle” along with a glass pipe containing suspected methamphetamine residue laying in the driver’s seat.

Kanipe was arrested and lodged in the Daviess County Detention Center.
