Fiscal Court officials announced they made $78,000 through their surplus auction this month. The event was expected to bring in $35,000.

“I was out there that day, a wonderful day for an auction and people bought bargains — they think,” Judge-Executive Al Mattingly said during Thursday’s Fiscal Court meeting.

In the past, Daviess County’s money has gone to the compost turner and other tools for the landfill and equipment used.

In other business, Fiscal Court proclaimed November as Diabetes Awareness Month. According to the proclamation, an estimated over 450,000 Kentuckians are diagnosed while 112,000 are undiagnosed for Diabetes. In Kentucky, it is also the 6th-leading cause of death from disease.

“Diabetes is relatively common, if not really common, in Kentucky — 13.3% of all adults in our commonwealth have diabetes. That was based on 2019 statistics,” Mattingly said.

Commissioners also approved a budget amendment for a $750,000 parks grant that was not previously budgeted due to it being received recently.

Commissioners also awarded the following to different departments:

  • Six sets of Turnout Gear to the Fire Rescue Department for $16,705
  • Spay Neuter Clinic Project to the Animal Control Department for $579,118
  • One new excavator for the Landfill Department for $319,890
  • One new fuel truck for the the Landfill Department for $142,485
  • Bullet Resistant Vests for the Detention Center for $575 per unit

They hired Jason Hawkins and Michael Reed as Road Department Utility Laborers and Kenneth Duke as a Road Department Service Technician, all effective pre-employment screenings.

Mattingly announced that if the COVID-19 reports drop below 25 cases per day, they will open meetings back up to the press and by appointment for groups to speak.

The next meeting for the Fiscal Court will be Nov. 8 at noon.
