Owensboro volleyball opened up the season with a tough win (25-23, 18-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-7), while Bowling Green swept Apollo to hand them its first loss (25-6, 25-14, 25-12) of the 2021 campaign.
Owensboro vs. Ohio County
Owensboro came out and set the tone from the jump, narrowly winning the first set 25-23. However, Ohio County quickly swung momentum.
Ohio County took a commanding 25-18 win in the second set and carried that energy into the third set, grabbing a 25-22 victory.
With its backs against the wall Owensboro was able to fight back, grabbing a 25-19 win to force a fifth set.
Owensboro was in complete control of the final set, taking a 15-7 win en route to the team’s first victory of the 2021 season.
The team had 11 aces, with 41 kills. Chase Mather and Brooklyn Williams led the way, combining for 23 of the team’s 41 kills, finishing with 13 and 10 respectively.
The group also had 93 digs, with Kennedy Thompson leading the way with 28. Hannah Ashley followed with 19, Mather had 18 and Maya Joska had 16.
Owensboro will return to action looking for its second win of the season Thursday when they host Hancock County at 7:30 p.m.
Apollo vs. Bowling Green
Bowling Green came into the match looking to put things away early, grabbing the first set of the night at 25-6.
Apollo showed signs of life in the second set with double digit scores, but Bowling Green’s offense was too much to overcome.
This led to 25-14 and 25-12 losses in the second and third set, handing Apollo the season-opening road loss.
Apollo will have two days off, returning for its first home game of the season on Friday, taking on Hancock County at 6 p.m. in the Apollo Summer Slam.
