Apollo High School was placed under lockdown Thursday morning after a report of a student with a weapon, but the district’s Special Law Enforcement Officers (SLEOs) quickly responded and resolved the situation safely. Officials said the weapon was identified as a realistic-looking BB gun, and there were no injuries reported.

Daviess County Public Schools Public Information Officer Lora Wimsatt said the incident was handled efficiently by the SLEOs to ensure everyone’s safety quickly.

Wimsatt said after the situation was handled, students were sent to their first-period classes to take attendance.

All students and staff members are safe and every classroom has been checked.

An email was sent to families just before 9 a.m. letting them know of the situation and that it has already been resolved at that time, with messaging making it clear that all students and staff were safe and that every classroom had been checked.

DCPS announced in 2020 they would be launching a new student safety initiative that would involve creating their own police agency and add law enforcement officers to their middle schools.

These SLEOs operate as a police department under the school district and separate from the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.
