Daviess County Fiscal Court proclaimed July 16-24, 2021, as Dust Bowl Week to celebrate the 48th annual basketball tournament.

President Byron Owens accepted the recognition and invited everyone to attend the tournament at Kendall-Perkins Park. Along with the games, they will kick the festivities off with a Gospel Celebration on July 18 at 7 p.m. and have Kid’s Day on July 21 with activities for all ages.

In other business during their meeting, Fiscal Court signed a service agreement to assess the structural condition of the the Panther Creek fire tower after it has been closed for several months. The agreement is with Gardner Engineering Consulting, PLLC.

Judge-Executive Al Mattingly said the main question they are entering with is whether or not the tower safe for people to use. Mattingly said that he and Commissioner George Wathen discussed the possibility that if the results shwed it wasn’t safe, Fiscal Court would consider keeping the tower standing but not removing the structure altogether.

Fiscal Court also approved an agreement with the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum for ROMP. The agreement is identical to last year except of a different emergency action plan.

The court also accepted bids for Horse Fork Creek Park to receive restrooms; the gun club received a bid for 10 new target throwing machines; and the Fire Rescue received custom pumpers. A motion for funding for the Juvenile Drug Court was also approved.

The Court approved the Daviess County’s Sheriff’s 2020 Tax Settlement and Quietus. Mattingly said that most of the money went elsewhere, listing Daviess County Public Schools, Daviess County Public Library and other places in the community.

They also approved the retirement of Public Works Administrative Assistant Karla Riney, effective July 31 after 26 years. They also hired Anna Williams as a part-time Animal Control Attendant.
