A structure fire at a home in the 1700 block of Leitchfield Road Friday afternoon caused severe smoke and fire damage throughout the residence. Owensboro Fire Department officials said the three residents were not injured.
According to Battalion Chief Steve Leonard, OFD received a call regarding a structure fire after the occupants attempted to put it out themselves with a garden hose.
“When the first units arrived, they found the front of the house fully involved with fire,” Leonard said. “It’s believed to have originated in the front bedroom. It then extended to the attic area.”
Roughly five units from OFD were called to the scene, Leonard said. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in 30 minutes but stayed at the scene for two hours total to conduct “salvage and overhaul,” Leonard said.
Leonard said the occupants lost some pets in the fire — he believed them to be rabbits and chickens — while a dog was saved.
OFD contacted the American Red Cross to assist the family with aftercare.
Owensboro Police Department, AMR and Owensboro Municipal Utilities also responded to the scene.
