A Monday morning picture of the Glover Cary “Blue Bridge” has had several hundred shares via Facebook after the photo revealed what appeared to be gaps in part of the physical structure. The post claimed the bridge was “falling apart,” but the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said the photo was taken of a handrail and though the issue will be looked at, it isn’t critical.
Keirsten Jaggers, public information officer for KYTC, spoke with state bridge inspector Tyler Goad, who studied the Facebook photo and guessed that the push-and-pull motion of the bridge caused high movement of that particular part of it. Copper sleeves are used to flex two pieces, she said.
“It’s a high-expansion area with the temperatures,” Jaggers said. “It’s not like, all of a sudden, the bridge is going to fall down.”
The last bridge inspection performed on the downtown bridge, which was built in 1940, was in June 2018, Jaggers said. Bridge inspections are performed every two years, so the structure is due for another one.
“Not today, but someone will be going soon to inspect the bridge,” Jaggers said.
