Across the Commonwealth, wrecks have decreased since COVID-19 hit the state at the end of March.

Trooper Corey King, public affairs officer for the Kentucky State Police, said the coronavirus pandemic has encouraged people to stay home and with many businesses migrating its employees to work from home, this has lead to a decrease in traffic congestion, which means fewer wrecks.

“Even though there are still a lot of people traveling on the roads, it’s not during that real congestive time which is early in the morning,” he said. “That in itself has probably been the biggest change for us and it’s a positive change.”

The duties of KSP troopers have also shifted because of the coronavirus. Troopers are focusing more on perimeter checks at schools and businesses and there’s always a trooper at the hospital monitoring at any given time, King said.

“All in all, our troopers are busier than what they were, but it’s a different type of busy,” he said. “It’s actually doing those perimeter checks, doing the property checks and fewer wrecks at this point, so that’s good.”

King reported there has not been law enforcement needed or notices given by KSP specifically for people who aren’t following COVID-19 mandates by Gov. Andy Beshear.

‘Most people are very compliant especially around here. We haven’t had any problems,” King said. “Everything has been working smoothly and that’s what we like.”
