With the coronavirus limiting in-person interaction, the Daviess County Public School Board of Education met Tuesday via video teleconference and primarily discussed the progress of Non-Traditional Instruction.

Kelly Skeens, principal at Daviess County Middle School, led the conversation about how NTI has gone so far.

“It’s been a lot of work,” Skeens said. “Overall it’s been a big adjustment, but I’m really proud of how our staff responded in a very, very short time.”

Incorporating NTI classes was not an easy task, Skeens said, and teachers and staff made changes and worked out the kinks to ensure students have a positive learning experience.

This is the first time DCPS is participating in NTI classes, which went live March 18. Skeens reported about 200 Chromebooks were distributed to students, and 97 percent of DCMS students have access to them and the internet.

She said the school has made 30 paper packets for students who don’t have Chromebook access.

“We have teams that meet regularly to discuss students growth, as we always have, and to reach out to students who are having difficulties,” Skeens said. “We’ve tried to make it work the very best that we can. We continue to make changes to meet the needs of students.”

Board members also considered a slight amendment to the school calendar that would affect staff, and they also considered approving a bid for custodial paper products, which includes toilet paper and paper towels.
