COVID-19 has limited how people are able to get food from their favorite restaurants, but Big O Takeout has been thriving since more businesses are looking to get their food delivered to customers.

In an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus, fast-food chains and restaurants have been forced to switch to carry-out, drive-thru or delivery as their only means of service.

Before, many places had never offered a delivery option.

“What we’ve seen mostly is more restaurants are reaching out,” said Big O Takeout owner Jonathan Brandle. “We used to have a hard time getting restaurants to partner with us. Now we’re seeing a lot more people.”

Big O Takeout, which was started in 2017, is the only locally owned food delivery service in Owensboro. At Brandle’s office Friday, he had boxes of gloves, bottles of Purell and cartons of snacks for his employees.

He said Big O Takeout is different from delivery-service giants such as Grubhub or DoorDash because with those options, there is no local investment.

Brandle said a tremendous amount of people have applied to become drivers, and he’s working to process the applications.

“With all the stuff going on now, something we’re trying to get out more is that we’ve had a ton of applications from displaced workers and we’re continuing to hire a lot of those people,” he said.

Brandle said at one point, he had 25 applications in one day, which is good because business has picked up some.

“I wouldn’t say it necessarily boomed,” he said. “We’ve haven’t seen a drastic incline, but we haven’t seen a decline either. I think a lot of people are still cautious in trying to avoid any interaction at all.”

Big O Takeout has an option for “no-contact” delivery.

“We actually have a box now that customers can check and it says to leave it at their door,” he said.
