On November 7th, just two days after Election Day, the Prism Arts Alliance (or “Prism”) will host its first Rainbow Roundtable: Pass a Plate with Prism sponsored by The Party Space Place. This gathering aims to create a welcoming space for members of the local LGBTQ+ community to share their thoughts, concerns, and aspirations with Prism’s leadership. According to board president and founder Jordan-Blake Key “by scheduling the event so close to the election, we are showing that regardless of who will be the next president, it will be necessary for the LGBTQ+ community to gather.”
Founded in response to growing anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments in Daviess County, the Prism Arts Alliance is a 501(c)(3) organization committed to fostering inclusivity and creating safe spaces for all individuals. The Rainbow Roundtable offers a unique opportunity for community members to directly influence Prism’s programming and initiatives.
Attendees will enjoy a complimentary meal (while supplies last) and participate in an open discussion facilitated by Prism representatives. The Roundtable will provide a platform for community members to: learn about Prism’s mission and current projects, share their experiences and challenges, discuss ideas for new programs and initiatives, and connect with other LGBTQ+ individuals in the area. Key contends that “every person deserves to feel safe, seen, and valued” and that “the Rainbow Roundtable is a crucial step in building a more inclusive and supportive community for all.”
Prism’s current programs include several arts groups catering to actors, writers, artists, and poets meeting once a month per group. They additionally publish “The Rainbow List,” a list of LGBTQ+ friendly businesses and organizations, which can be found on their website at https://prismartsalliance.org/the-rainbow-list. In order to be a member of that list organizations must meet one of three qualifications: (1) be LGBTQ+ owned or led, (2) have policies that protect LGBTQ+ people such as a fair hiring policy that includes sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes, AND/OR (3) show public support for the LGBTQ+ community such as a “y’all means all” sign or a social media post.
Prism leadership is hopeful that engagement in the form of this event could bring long-term benefits for the LGBTQ+ community in Daviess County and could give its members and allies alike an opportunity to form connections in ways previously not available to them.
