St. Benedict’s Homeless Shelter for men recently posted on social media that they were in need of several items, both large and small, in order to better provide for the men that reside there. The shelter recently posted a need for an electric dryer “to replace the one that stopped working this morning and is beyond repair.” While a generous community member did step up to fulfill that need, the shelter still has daily needs and summer need requests.

Shelter Director Harry Pedigo is constantly looking for ways to not only ensure the needs of the men are taken care of, but that he can give them other conveniences that might help reduce the stresses of daily life.

“As far as the bigger items (like dryers), they provide the men with other amenities,” Pedigo said. “Those amenities allow them to feel a sense of ease from the hustle and bustle of day to day struggles.”

Although hygiene and personal care items are always needed at St. Benedict’s, Pedigo has also created a summer wishlist of items that will help improve, not only the environment of the shelter, but morale as well.

St. Benedict’s is currently asking for donations of picnic tables and benches, as well as landscaping items for flower beds, including mulch, flowers and other gardening supplies.

Other warm-weather items include shower shoes (flip flops size 9-12), umbrellas and raincoats or ponchos.

Some of the other immediate needs are:

  • deodorant
  • shampoo
  • body wash
  • cereal
  • aspirin, Tylenol, Motrin
  • coffee creamer
  • sugar
  • aluminum foil

“It’s all about change,” Pedigo said. “These things are things the men use daily. Donations inspire men by showing them the support they have within the community — that sense of being alone lessons.”

Looking toward summer, St. Benedict’s is also “prayerfully seeking sponsors” and players for their 4th Annual Golf Scramble Fundraiser. For further information, to sign up for a team, or to become a sponsor, visit their website.

“It is because of the support of compassionate community members that St. Benedict’s has the opportunity to serve men in our community as they rebuild their lives,” Pedigo said.

Donations can be dropped off at 1001 W 7th St. anytime Monday through Friday and after 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. (270) 541-1003
