The timing of the tantrum is perfectly predictable. Inevitable. When the last piece of bread is devoured by one child in my home, the next child scampers immediately to my hip, whimpering, “I’m starving!!” Never mind the hills of the loaf shoved back into the bag and stuffed in the back of the pantry to mold. Forget the apples, bananas, and oranges freshly displayed on the table. When the bread is gone, my kids believe they may starve. I immediately counter with the sermon, “There are actual starving children in Africa. You are not starving.” But the fact does nothing to deter the whining.

The truth is that while my children are not starving, there are starving children in Africa. The really hard truth to swallow is that there are also hungry children right here in Owensboro. Now. Today. 18% of kids in Kentucky go to bed hungry; specifically, 4280 Daviess County kids go to bed hungry on any given evening. Seniors aged 50-59 in Kentucky have the highest rate of food insecurity. The knowledge of this truth debilitates me. What am I supposed to do with this truth? When I learned about Empty Bowls, I was flooded with relief. I don’t have to track down every hungry child on my own; the wheel has already been invented! Someone has already done the difficult leg work and is addressing the issue! And now that I’m in the know, I have absolutely no excuse not to support them. And if you’ve read this far, you’re out of excuses now, too! Enter: Empty Bowls! You must click on this link (www.ProjectVolunteer.org) to learn more about Empty Bowls and contact them immediately to show support in some capacity! Don’t wait until tomorrow; you’ll forget! Absolutely no child should go to sleep hungry tonight!
