Owensboro High School rising sophomore Drew Johnson was one of 25 students across the Commonwealth selected to attend the Mitch McConnell Young Leaders Academy last week, and he said it was a great opportunity to learn about the nation’s Constitution.

The Young Leaders Academy is a 4-day summer program held at the University of Louisville to teach students about the founding of America.

Conference topics include the origins of the written constitution, the Federalist and Anti-Federalist debates, and more. Johnson said attending helped him learn the constitution and functionality of the amendments better than he would’ve through regular schooling.

“I liked learning about the Bill of Rights and how they fit into the judicial system, how deep it really goes,” Johnson said. “The way you learn amendments in school is kind of basic, but like with the freedom of religion there’s actually so many different clauses to it.”

He also enjoyed getting to meet several other students from across the Commonwealth. But when it came to meeting U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Johnson was glad to be able to learn about the leader’s journey.

Johnson said: “I was interested in how he was a lesser-known candidate that worked his way up to one of the most powerful men in the country, if not the world.”
