Owensboro Public Schools officials announced Thursday that Cravens and Sutton elementary schools are seeing strides in the construction of their new facilities.
Chris Bozarth, Director of Maintenance & Technology for OPS, said that the front door on Cravens has been installed and students are able to use that entrance rather than going through the trailers like they have in recent months.
“That happened a couple of days ago, so we’re still working through a few little kinks, but it’s worth it to be able to be up front,” Bozarth said.
Due to limited free space during construction, some classes have been moved to the trailers that were formerly the entrance.
Bozarth said the school is nearly ready to enter the next phase of construction as they are getting some projects finished before the school year lets out. He said there is a much larger phase that will take place during the summer.
At Sutton, Bozarth said that they are struggling with getting footers in the ground at the renovation site.
“It seems like we get one step forward then have two steps back; there are ground issues, having to relocate some utilities,” he said.
He hopes that in the coming weeks, his team can make major announcements regarding the site.
Additionally, he OPS Board of Education during their Thursday meeting approved the resolution provided by House Bill 678, which contains new processes for construction.
“House Bill 678 provides great flexibilities to local boards of education relating to the funding on a constructive design, construction, renovation or modification districts facilities and other facilities related matters,” Superintendent Dr. Matthew Constant said.
