Owensboro Public Schools is one of 19 districts statewide to receive a literacy grant totaling $996,726 over the next three years from the Kentucky Department of Education’s Comprehensive Learning Round 2.

The grant will allow the district to focus on literacy efforts and writing instruction. In tandem, it will also pay half of the cost for the district literacy coach’s salary and benefits, professional consultant fees, supplementary books, and more.

“Using our literacy needs assessment, we will follow our literacy plan to close literacy learner gaps while providing specific supports for at-risk learners,” OPS Public Information Officer Jared Revlett said.

The funding for the project will be distributed among three different age groups as follows: 16% for birth to age 5, 42% for kindergarten to 5th grade and 42% for middle and high school.

Some of OPS’s literacy project partners include the H.L. Neblett Community Center, Inc., Green River District Health Department/First Steps, Audubon-Area Community Services, Inc./Head Start, and more.

In 2018, OPS received the Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Grant which helped the system focus their literacy efforts through literacy professional learning opportunities for teachers, purchase of resources instruction and the hiring of a district literacy coach.
