Cara Wesner has been named head teacher at Valley School, She will oversee all aspects of educational services for students enrolled in Valley School, which includes elementary through high school levels.
“I am very excited to work with the staff at Valley School and DCPS as we strive to help our students grow to be the best they can be,” Wesner said.
She replaces Lesa Hibbs, who retired at the conclusion of the 2020-21 school year.
Wesner has served as certified school manager at Morganfield Elementary School in Union County for the past two years. Before that, she served as general education and special education teacher in the Henderson County school district for 14 years.
Wesner recently completed her Rank I in administration from the University of the Cumberlands. She earned a bachelor of science degree from Murray State University and a master’s degree from Oakland City College.
“Mrs. Wesner’s background and passion to see all students succeed set her apart from other applicants,” said DCPS director of middle and high schools Charles Broughton. “She has a proven history of success as an educational leader and we are fortunate to have her join DCPS.”
Valley School is an alternative education program designed to meet the needs of at-risk students in a setting that supports academic performance, improves behavior and provides enhanced learning experiences.
The Kentucky Department of Education defines the mission of alternative education programs as one that “ensures continuous improvement in instruction, practices and curriculum to help all Kentucky students to be college and career ready.”
Goals include ensuring that all students have equitable access to district resources and qualified teachers.
