In an effort to raise awareness for National Child Abuse Prevention Month, 8th-graders from Owensboro Innovation Middle School are partnering with GRADD to plant blue pinwheels on the lawn of Kentucky Wesleyan College on Aprill 11. The community is invited to join the effort.
The planting event will begin at 9 a.m. with a proclamation from Daviess County Family Court Judges Jennifer Hendricks and Angela Johnson declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Daviess County.
Ashley Nash, a teacher at the middle school, said “Throughout the month of April, the iMiddle 8th-graders will write and record public service announcements encouraging members of our community to join together to prevent child abuse. This project provides students not only the opportunity to develop written and verbal communication skills, but also immerses them in an important social issue.”
As the national symbol of child abuse prevention, the blue pinwheels will remain throughout the month on the KWC lawn, which will also be the location for the annual STAND Against Child Abuse from 4:30-7:30 p.m. on on April 14. Agencies and organizations interested in participating in the STAND can contact Kristy James, Community Collaboration for Children Program Coordinator, at [email protected] or 270-852-1381.
