After it’s anticipated return was cancelled last year, outdoor ice skating is coming back to Owensboro this winter. The 80×60-foot rink — called “Energy on Ice” — is made of synthetic ice and will be located on the Kentucky Legend Pier behind the Owensboro Convention Center.
The grand opening is scheduled for Nov. 26, and the facility is expected to be open and host various events each weekend through Jan. 3 — including movie nights, music, and a breakfast with Santa. Admission to the rink will be $10 including skate rental, or $8 for those with their own skates. Tickets will be sold at the rink.
Though it wasn’t able to be utilized for the Winter Wonderland event that was planned for downtown in 2020, the rink made its debut inside the Convention Center earlier this year during a “Christmas in July” themed Friday After 5.
Energy on Ice is possible due to an innovative partnership between Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline, Atmos Energy, Boardwalk Pipeline Partners, and the Staton Family Foundation.
Some tips for visiting the Energy on Ice rink:
- Wear layered, warm clothing that doesn’t restrict movement
- Free parking will be available in the Owensboro Convention Center parking lot
- Masks are not required outdoors at Energy On Ice, but are required inside the Owensboro Convention Center
- Concessions will be available on site
