The Owensboro Black Expo has announced a partnership with Academy Sports + Outdoors to start the “AfroCamp” initiative to promote diversity in nature activities.
The program will offer free equipment leasing programs for tents, coolers, grills and other outdoor necessities to families and individuals planning outdoor trips this fall.
“Owensboro Black Expo believes that our city-county is stronger when diverse communities are included in all aspects of civic life, including the great outdoors,” said Black Expo member Dracin Williams.
The program comes after realizing the number of Black families that camp when reading We’re Here, You Just Can’t See Us, an article written by Latria Graham. In the article, 70% of those surveyed said they participate in some form of outdoor experience such as hiking, camping or picnicking.
