The Daviess County Public Library will kick off this year’s summer reading program, called Explore and Connect, with a city-wide scavenger hunt. The program officially starts today and runs through July 31. Later this week the library is also hosting a settlers fair.

Participants can log in to their existing accounts or create new accounts by visiting the website here or by downloading the Beanstack Tracker App on their mobile device.

Tiffani Henry, Public Relations Coordinator, said the library’s mission is to serve as a community connecter.

“We thought that a city-wide scavenger hunt would not only help to kick off the summer reading program but also help connect our readers with local businesses,” Henry said.

There are currently 13 stops on the scavenger hunt. Participants will use the Explore & Connect Scavenger Hunt program on Beanstack to log progress and be entered to win prizes.

Those that participate in the scavenger hunt will be given clues to different locations throughout Owensboro. The poster will have a different code word for each location. Participants will choose which local business they would like to visit to help complete the program. They will enter the code word located on the poster into their Beanstack app to earn the badge for that location, and be entered to win a gift card from that location.

In addition to the scavenger hunt, participants of the Summer Reading program will record minutes on the Beanstack site/app or on a log sheet. Prizes will be awarded to all participants who complete 10 hours of reading. Children 12 and younger will also receive a prize book after reading five hours.

Additionally, at the end of the program, the participant in each age category with the most reading minutes will get a special prize.

Currently the library has more than 400 people signed up for the 2021 program.

Later this week, the Daviess County Public Library and the Kentucky Room will host a Kentucky Settlers Fair.

The event is set for 2 p.m. Saturday in the library’s reading garden. There will be demonstrations by local blacksmith Lane Maddox, gunsmiths Marvin Kemper and Gary Tucker, and Owensboro leathercrafter Joe Mills.

More information is available under the events tab at DCPLibrary.org.
