The basketball court at Kendall Perkins Park is set to be outfitted with new backboards and rims — but not until Daviess County falls back into the state’s yellow zone in terms of the coronavirus incidence rate.
They yellow zone means there are from one to nine new cases per 100,000 people daily. Currently Daviess County is in the orange zone — from 10 and 24 cases per 100,000 — with a 16.3 rate as of Tuesday night.
During a Northwest Neighborhood Alliance meeting on Tuesday, Chairperson Rafe Buckner said the number of COVID-19 cases in the area was the only obstacle in the project’s way.
“We got an email from [City Parks & Recreation Director] Amanda Rogers, and everything is a go. They have been ordered,” Buckner said. “The only holdup is, they’re not wanting to put the goals up until we’re in yellow.”
The Alliance collected all the money for the rims and backboards through its own fundraising efforts. The upgrade will provide the basketball goals with a polycarbonate material that will be long-lasting and high-quality.
Basketball rims were removed from all of the City’s public courts months ago to prevent large groups of people gathering together and spreading the virus.
