After her son died in February of 2020 due to COVID-19, Ladona and her husband Mike Burns have been taking care of his gravesite in Rosehill-Elmwood Cemetery and Mausoleum. They are now opening a gravesite care business for families in the city.

While they were thinking about what to do in their retirement for the future, they decided to start SonMaid & Me. The business will allow families to choose a plan best for them and their departed loved ones.

Ladona said the idea for the business started when they realized they wanted to treat their son’s site at a better level than what was being offered at the cemetery. Over time, she said people would compliment his burial site, from the headstone to the mowing.

“Sometimes if it was appropriate we’d say ‘we’re thinking of starting’ a business because we’re doing it from the interest of our hearts,” Burns said.

Now they hope to be able to treat what they call their “son’s neighbors” with different packages ranging from gravestone maintenance to personalized occasions.

She said prices for each service are set per request. The mowing can be paid as an annual fee, however it is only for March through October.
