From writing songs with a Hall of Famer as a kid in Beaver Dam to penning tracks for national television shows and well-known artists, Scott Lindsey has carved out a successful music career. Now, he’s sharing that experience with students at St. Mary of the Woods School in Whitesville.
Lindsey’s musical journey began early. His father fronted The Star Dusters Band, often rehearsing at their home. He also collaborated with Tommy Collins, a Hall of Fame songwriter known for hits like “If You Ain’t Lovin’ (You Ain’t Livin’).”
“Tommy would come up to Beaver Dam sometimes and write with my dad,” Lindsey said. “That’s where the fire really started for me. My dad and Tommy taught me how to write a song, and I got the itch to perform from being around Dad’s band.”
Lindsey would go on to study music at Belmont University and finish his degree at Middle Tennessee State University before settling in Nashville.
Since then, he’s had songs recorded by the Bellamy Brothers, rock band Black Stone Cherry, and others. The track “In Love With The Pain” hit No. 2 on the rock charts, and his band’s song “Devil Don’t Sleep” was featured in the FOX drama Monarch, which starred Trace Adkins and Susan Sarandon.
One of his biggest collaborations came when he co-wrote a song for the hit show Yellowstone — sung by Kevin Costner. (Watch it here.)
“Writing and performing are just in my blood,” Lindsey said. “When you write and get a great song — wow. What a feeling. When the crowd enjoys it with applause — wow. That’s it, I guess.”
Lindsey is currently working on a new solo album titled “ME,” which features eight tracks.
“I’ve been working on this album for a year,” he said. “I’ve learned to just take opportunities as they come and not stick to a strict plan. Right now, the goal is to get it out there and promote it right.”
That includes mastering the modern music business, where social media plays a key role.
“The entire model has changed,” Lindsey said. “It’s very demanding to keep your fans interested while also gaining new ones. But if you get the right thing out at the right time, it can change everything almost overnight.”
For now, Lindsey finds fulfillment both in the studio and in the classroom — helping the next generation discover their creative spark. He has helped start a band at St. Mary of the Woods School and Trinity High School and enjoys sharing stories from his musical career with his students.
