Cynthia Riney opened Etc. Boutique in late February, fulfilling a longtime dream as she enters the local boutique market. Riney takes pride in offering both clothing and furniture, focusing on products that aren’t always available elsewhere.
“February is not usually a good month for small businesses, but I actually did pretty well,” Riney said.
After several friends shared her new shop on Facebook, word spread throughout the community, and the business continued to welcome new customers.
“I offer mature women’s clothing instead of just juniors. I also offer children’s clothing, jewelry, gifts, wreaths, furniture, and decor — both new and used — because I like the variety,” Riney said.
This isn’t Riney’s first business venture — she previously owned A Repeat Boutique with a friend.
“At that time, I had three grandchildren and one on the way. I also have five children. Owning a consignment shop at that stage was not easy,” she said.
Now, with three children grown and married and two still at home, Riney is thankful for her family’s support.
“My husband got out of the family business a couple of years ago, and now he helps me. My kids tell me that I deserve it. They know I sacrificed a lot for them, and they’re happy for me to chase my dream,” she said.
While she enjoys running the shop, Riney said the best part of her business goes beyond the products she sells.
“I love people,” she said. “I also love making people happy. I have a win-win because I can help them work on their home, build confidence in clothing and feel good about themselves. I have a happy job.”
Riney also creates handmade products, including seasonal wreaths.
“I create and sell seasonal wreaths for Easter, spring, and summer. I have extras made because it’s just fun for me — it’s therapy. The way it’s going, I’ll have to keep making quite a few. In the garage, I already have fall and Christmas wreaths made, too,” she said.
Looking ahead, Riney plans to see how this year unfolds but hopes to expand, possibly adding men’s clothing or a paint line. Ultimately, she is grateful for the support so far.
“Hometown really helps a lot. With kids in sports, I met many people that way. I also made lots of friends when I had the consignment shop. They keep coming back to me,” she said.
Etc. Boutique is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at 1902 Daviess Street.
