Participants at the Opportunity Center in Owensboro got their hands dirty in the best way Monday, teaming up with the City of Owensboro’s Public Works Department for a series of Earth Day projects focused on sustainability, education, and accessibility.
The partnership came to life after Opportunity Center clients toured the Public Works Department and were fascinated by the equipment, operations, and services they observed. A written reflection from one of the clients made its way to City Hall and struck a chord.
“Previously, we toured Public Works. When a colleague composed a written reflection, Executive Director Rosemary Conder passed it along to the City Manager,” said Ashlee Berry, the center’s community engagement director. “When the City read the piece, they were touched and reached out to see how they could give back to our mission and the clients we serve.”
On Earth Day, city crews showed up with trees, lumber, a backhoe, tools, and a dump truck full of dirt. The Engineering Department kicked off the day with a rain barrel presentation, helping participants build one of their own on-site.
Next, staff from Facilities Maintenance and the Street Department helped clients construct raised garden beds designed to be accessible for individuals with disabilities. The garden beds were then filled with soil, and two new seedling trees were planted at the front of the building, with participants pitching in every step of the way.
“The City was so gracious,” said Executive Director Rosemary Conder. “They brought everything, let the participants help, and made sure everyone had the chance to engage and learn.”
Berry said the day was a huge hit with both staff and participants.
“It gave our clients the opportunity to learn about conservation efforts happening in our community, as well as how they can help preserve and protect the environment in different ways,” she said. “The clients loved it.. We had great weather, and even better company between the Engineering, Facility Maintenance, and Street Department staff.”
Conder agreed, saying the collaboration was both meaningful and memorable.
“It was a really fun day. Everybody really enjoyed it, and what a perfect weather day it was for that as well,” she said.
