The Owensboro chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is hosting a guided walking tour at Elmwood Cemetery on Sunday, April 27, to highlight the lives of pioneering women who helped shape Daviess County’s history.

Titled Women Who Broke Barriers, the tour begins at 2 p.m. and will feature stories of educators, activists, entrepreneurs, and public servants who challenged the norms of their time and paved the way for future generations.

“These women were leaders in every sense of the word,” said Mary Cupp, president of the Owensboro AAUW chapter. “They may rest in Elmwood, but their influence still echoes in our schools, our courts, and our community organizations.”

AAUW members will guide attendees through the cemetery, sharing the personal histories and achievements of the women being honored. Organizers say the event will offer an inspiring and educational experience that connects the past to the present in a meaningful way.

The tour is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and bring water. In case of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled.

A self-guided version of the tour is also available year-round through brochures located at the entrance of Elmwood Cemetery.

Founded in 1881, the American Association of University Women advocates for women and girls through education, research, and policy. The Owensboro chapter continues that mission locally through programs and initiatives that promote equity and opportunity.

Photos and stories of the featured women are also available on the AAUW Owensboro YouTube channel.
