Owensboro native Samuel Avery is carving out his place in the indie music scene with the release of his latest single, “Loved.” Signed to Evansville-based label Wally Opus Records, Avery’s solo career is gaining traction after years of playing in various bands.

“‘Loved’ first came to be back around 2017 or 2018 while I was going through an on-again, off-again relationship,” Avery said. “I was struggling with feeling like I could never have any genuine connection with someone because I felt unlovable.”

Originally a hard rock alternative song, “Loved” has since evolved into a more somber, introspective piece.

“I guess I was more angry back then,” Avery said. “When I re-approached this song last year, I envisioned it in a softer, more defeated tone.”

The track features Avery’s longtime friend and labelmate Sam Kuban of Swamp Eyes, who adds vocal harmonies and cello swells to the song.

“I could hear his voice mixing with mine really well and asked him to record some vocals for the song, and it turned out amazing,” Avery said. “Instead of just rerecording some of the harmonies I made, he really made it his own and added whole new melodies plus some cello parts. It really elevated the song to a new level.”

This collaboration marks the first time Avery has featured another artist on one of his songs, and the experience has inspired him to continue working with Kuban on future projects.

“This is one of my most vulnerable songs, so it’s weird sharing it with people, but it’s even weirder working with others on it,” Avery said. “I’m glad I did because it turned into my favorite song I’ve ever released.”

“Loved” is the third single from Avery, following “Planted” and “Bummer,” which have collectively garnered over 60,000 streams. The song builds from acoustic guitar and intimate vocals into a climactic blend of piano, bass, strings, and harmonies, showcasing the perfect stylistic fusion of both artists.

Produced by Wesley Luttrell at Wally Opus Sound Studios, with art direction and video work by Christian Potts, Avery said “Loved” is the result of a close-knit collaboration among friends who grew up in the southern Indiana music scene.

“For me, music isn’t just a form of expression; it’s a journey of self-discovery,” Avery said.

“Loved” will stream everywhere on February 21. Listeners can follow Avery on Instagram and TikTok at @samuelaverymusic.
