Figure skating competition coming to Owensboro this weekend

Local skaters will take part in the 13th Annual Living on the Edge ISI Invitational Skating Competition this weekend. More than 100 figure skaters from 5 teams across the country will compete in the event, which is free to attend.

The event will run March 7-9 at the City of Owensboro’s Edge Ice Center (1400 Hickman Avenue).

The Owensboro team is comprised of 35 local skaters ages 4 to adult who are enrolled in the Learn to Skate Classes or are members of the Owensboro Figure Skating Club.

According to team coach Kerry Bodenheimer, the local club has been practicing hard and is ready to compete on their home ice after just returning from the ISI Winter Classic National event in St. Peters, Missouri, where the team finished 3rd overall out of 15 teams.

Competing teams include the Robert Unger Ice Chalet from Knoxville, Tennessee; Lou and Gib Reese Ice Arena, Newark OH; St. Peters Rec-Plex, St. Peters, Missouri; the Huntsville Ice Sports Complex, Huntsville, Alabama;  and the City of Owensboro’s Edge Ice Center. 111 skaters will compete in the 3-day event creating an estimated direct economic impact to the community of $153,738.

The competition will run from 4 to 9 p.m. on March 7, 7:30 a.m. to9 p.m. Saturday, and 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The facility will be closed for public skating throughout the weekend.
