The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office is taking applications for the second class of its Citizens Academy. Sheriff Brad Younmgan said the academy is designed to provide a hands-on experience where deputies can connect with Daviess County citizens by educating them on DCSO’s role in the community while increasing awareness of their operations and capabilities.
“We held our first citizens academy class last year, and it was a tremendous success,” Youngman said. “We had a very interactive and enthusiastic group, and we all, students and instructors, had a lot of fun.”
The program will last 8 weeks, beginning on April 9 and concluding with a graduation banquet on June 11. During the academy, one class will be held each week on Wednesday evenings from 6-8:30 p.m. The topics will range from overviews of patrol, investigations, and court security to lessons on traffic stops and mock crime scenes.
Students will participate in a ride-along, firearms familiarization, and facility tours while hearing from several representatives from different areas within the Sheriff’s Office. The class will also spend one of the sessions at the Daviess County Detention Center and the Daviess County Fire Department to become more familiar with those agencies’ operations and to see how they all work together to keep the community safe.
Participants must be a Daviess County resident, 21 years of age or older with a valid driver’s license, and commit to attending each class to graduate from the academy. They also must not have ever been convicted of a felony crime or domestic violence and cannot have any pending criminal charges or protective orders. Applicants will be asked to confirm that they are willing to submit to a background check as part of the application process.
Those interested can apply here. The deadline to apply is March 19. There is no cost to participate in the program.
