Daviess County Public Schools is inviting community members to test drive a school bus this Saturday in an effort to recruit new drivers. The event will offer a hands-on experience and details about the job’s part-time hours and full-time benefits.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4801 Frederica Street (the former U.S. Bank building).
Grady Cooper, DCPS director of transportation, said the event is aimed at finding individuals who may not realize they have what it takes to be a bus driver.
“There are a lot of good people out there who think they couldn’t drive something that big,” Cooper said. “But once they get in and try it, they see that it’s easier than they thought. We’re hoping to bring in about 15 to 20 more drivers.”
While the district has enough drivers to cover most routes, Cooper said they are working to restore full transportation for preschool programs. Currently, DCPS only provides midday transportation for preschool students due to the number of drivers available.
“I can’t promise we’ll get the morning and afternoon preschool routes back until we find the right people,” Cooper said. “That’s what we’re hoping to do.”
DCPS is looking for candidates available to work five days a week, preferably for both morning and afternoon routes, though there is some flexibility. Drivers must obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL), but the district provides training to help with the certification process.
The position guarantees at least 25 hours per week, which qualifies employees for full-time benefits, including health insurance. Additional hours are available through field trips and other routes.
“It’s a great opportunity for retirees or anyone looking for secondary income,” Cooper said. “Not many part-time jobs offer full-time benefits.”
The test drive event will take place in a closed course under the supervision of a driver trainer. Participants must bring a valid driver’s license and wear closed-toe shoes.
Those interested can apply on-site or submit an application later. The hiring process typically takes about three weeks, followed by five to six weeks of training. New drivers could be on the road before the end of the school year and guaranteed a position for the fall semester.
“We have a great team here,” Cooper said. “If you like working with kids and want a meaningful job, this could be the perfect fit.”
