RiverValley Behavioral Health has opened submissions for its 5th Annual Youth Mental Health Art Contest, an initiative aimed at encouraging young people to use art as a platform for raising awareness about mental health. The contest’s 2025 theme, “Be Kind to Your Mind,” invites students to create artwork that promotes messages of hope, understanding, and kindness.

Since its launch in 2021, the competition has grown significantly, with more than 1,500 entries submitted and over $15,000 awarded in scholarships and donations.

“The Youth Mental Health Art Contest continues to be a source of inspiration and empowerment for our youth, and we are thrilled to launch this year’s event,” said Dr. Wanda Figueroa, RVBH President & CEO. “Each year, we are amazed by the creativity and powerful messages shared through art, reminding us of the importance of mental well-being.”

Students of all ages are invited to submit visual art pieces — such as drawings, paintings, sculptures, or poetry — that promote mental health awareness through positivity, compassion, and care. Entries are due by April 16, with finalists announced in May and an awards ceremony set for June.

Prizes will be awarded in four age categories: K-4, 5-8, 9-12, and College (18-24). Each winner will receive a $500 scholarship, along with a matching donation to their school or organization. The organization with the most entries will be named Mental Health Partner of the Year and receive a $1,000 award.

“The art contest is truly one of our favorite annual events,” said Brooke Arnold, Director of the RVBH Regional Prevention Center. “Each year, we are amazed by the creativity, thoughtfulness, and compassion expressed by students. It’s incredible to see our schools and youth organizations encouraging young artists to share their voices through art.”

In addition to the contest, RVBH is accepting nominations for the Dianne McFarling Memorial Award, which honors individuals or organizations dedicated to improving mental health in the community. Nominations are open through April 16.
