Two dozen local churches will come together Saturday for a unique Habitat for Humanity event dubbed a “Disciples Build,” uniting members of different congregations to construct a new home. Churches have each contributed financially to the project and will provide labor, with groups arriving in shifts throughout the day to build and assemble walls for the home’s foundation.

The event will take place at Carter Community Court, the first entire subdivision built by Habitat for Humanity Owensboro-Daviess County.

Jeremy Stephens, executive director of the local Habitat chapter, said the event reflects the organization’s mission and strong relationship with local faith communities.

“We are so excited to host a day where our construction site will welcome members of so many churches in our community,” Stephens said. “As a Christian organization, we’ve always had a lot of support from churches in Owensboro-Daviess County. The Disciples Build was created as a way to get more engaged with as many people as possible, and I love the symbolism of all the churches coming together to serve, as we are called to do in our faith.”

Volunteers will begin arriving at 8:30 a.m., with three churches scheduled every 30 minutes until all the walls are built and positioned on the foundation. By the end of the day, the structure for the first of 10 homes planned for the subdivision in 2025 will be standing.

Dr. David Danhauer, chair of the Habitat board, said the project builds on the faith-based roots of the organization.

“In the tradition of Habitat’s mission, our Disciples Build brings together members of many faiths to extend the love of God to our neighbors,” Danhauer said. “What a gift this is, both for those giving and for those receiving.”

Randy Lanham, a member of Bridgepointe Church and longtime volunteer in the community, said he has never seen such a broad collaboration of churches working together on one project.

“It is going to be a magical day and the perfect reflection of what the church is all about — going outside their four walls to build for others,” Lanham said.

While Habitat was constructing homes in other parts of the community last year, crews laid the infrastructure for Carter Community Court, setting the stage for Saturday’s milestone.
