Daviess County Public Schools has launching a new initiative to define the knowledge, skills, and attributes students need to succeed in an evolving world. The district is inviting parents, educators, students, business leaders, and community members to collaborate in developing the “Daviess County Portrait of a Learner,” a shared vision that will guide future instruction and curriculum at DCPS.
“A Portrait of a Learner is an agreed-upon set of aspirations for what every learner will know and be able to do in an ever-changing world that is driven by technology, human interaction, and innovation,” said Superintendent Charles Broughton. “The Portrait of a Learner gives school leaders and teachers the framework to design instruction in a way that promotes real-world competencies and job readiness.”
The first of three community stakeholder design meetings was held in late January. These meetings will provide an opportunity for participants to contribute ideas and help shape the initiative.
In addition to the community meetings, DCPS is conducting a survey through February 10 to gather input from residents across the county. The survey is open to all, regardless of their connection to the school system, and aims to ensure the final Portrait of a Learner reflects the community’s values and aspirations. The Portrait of a Learner initiative aims to strengthen connections between schools, families, businesses and the broader community. Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Jana Beth Francis emphasized the importance of input from all stakeholders.
“Partnering with our stakeholders allows us to create a roadmap that truly reflects what Daviess County hopes for our students. The Portrait of a Learner will support our educators as they plan for more engaging instruction,” said Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Jana Beth Francis.
Once finalized, the Portrait of a Learner will serve as a guiding document for curriculum development, classroom instruction and community partnerships. The district’s goal is to ensure students graduate equipped with the skills and character to succeed in college, careers and life.
“Together, we can shape a future where every learner in Daviess County reaches their fullest potential,” Broughton said.
