Daviess County Public Schools has opened applications for its Empower U program, one of Kentucky’s largest dual-credit initiatives. The program provides high school students with opportunities to earn college credits while still in high school through partnerships with local institutions, including the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.
“Empower U is our entire dual credit program, and we’re incredibly fortunate to have such strong support from our partners, particularly Owensboro Community & Technical College,” said Amanda Jerome, DCPS College and Career Readiness Coordinator. “They’ve really allowed us to take ownership of this program and make it our own.”
Currently, approximately 1,200 DCPS students are enrolled in dual-credit courses, Jerome said, with more than 200 on track to earn associate degrees upon high school graduation. The remaining students take one or more college courses, with some participating in technical programs such as welding, nursing, and HVAC technology.
“Every student has a different story,” Jerome said. “Some are full-time and working toward an associate degree, while others are taking hands-on technical courses tailored to what they see for themselves in the future.”
Empower U begins as early as ninth grade with the Engineering and Life Science Academies. The program also offers pathways in Agriculture, Early College, Coding, Advanced Placement, and Technical Courses, with students able to mix and match courses to create a customized academic experience.
“This program allows students to explore potential careers before committing to a four-year university,” Jerome said. “They can earn college credit at a reduced rate, which helps families save money while giving students a head start on their future.”
Dual credit tuition is currently half the price of the standard Kentucky Community and Technical College System rate, costing $95 per credit hour. Additionally, all juniors and seniors in Kentucky are eligible for two free dual-credit classes per year – up to four total – through the Kentucky Dual Credit Scholarship.
DCPS recently expanded Empower U by adding a Teacher Education Pathway, which gives students a head start on prerequisite courses for a future in education. Additionally, a partnership with Kentucky Wesleyan College has led to the creation of the Wesleyan Academy, which allows students to begin earning credits in specialized degree programs, such as zoology.
“This is a great option for students who may want to start at Kentucky Wesleyan early or explore unique degree programs,” Jerome said. “There are just so many exciting opportunities for students and families.”
Applications for Empower U close on March 14. Any parent or student interested in learning more can visit the Empower U website or contact Amanda Jerome directly at [email protected].
