Bishop William Medley is calling on Catholics across the Diocese of Owensboro to pray for Pope Francis as the 88-year-old pontiff remains in critical condition. Francis is battling double pneumonia and a worsening lung infection, the Vatican announced Saturday.

“The Holy Father’s condition remains critical. The Pope is not out of danger,” the Vatican said in a statement.

Pope Francis recently suffered a “prolonged asthma-like respiratory crisis,” requiring supplemental oxygen. Doctors also administered blood transfusions due to a low platelet count. While he remains alert and spent the day in a chair, his prognosis is guarded. Medical officials fear the infection could progress to sepsis.

Pope Francis will not lead Sunday prayers for the second consecutive week. Despite speculation about a possible resignation, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin dismissed the rumors, saying the focus remains on the Pope’s recovery.

“As we follow the reports of the serious illness of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, I ask all the Church of the Diocese of Owensboro to continue our prayers for his strength and comfort,” Medley said. “We entrust him to the care of Mary, Mother of the Church, for whom he shows deep affection.”

According to the Western Kentucky Catholic, the Diocese of Owensboro has been closely connected to the Pope’s vision in recent years. In December, the Diocese launched the Jubilee Year 2025 celebrations, aligning with the Pope’s call for a renewed sense of hope. Medley led the opening Mass at St. Stephen Cathedral, encouraging local Catholics to embrace the jubilee’s theme of “Pilgrims of Hope.”

Additionally, the Diocese participated in the Pope’s global synodal listening sessions to foster inclusivity and deeper engagement within the church.

Pope Francis has been widely recognized for his emphasis on humility and social justice. His leadership has resonated with many Catholics, particularly for his advocacy for marginalized communities.
