After 17 years of owning and operating the Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio in Owensboro, Debbie Abney has decided to sell the business, marking the end of her ownership in a store that has served the community for more than seven decades.

Abney’s connection to the business runs deep. Her mother previously co-owned and owned the studio, and Abney grew up helping out at the store.

“I’ve been around this business for most of my life,” Abney said. “It’s been a family connection for decades, and I’m proud to have continued that legacy.”

Abney purchased the franchise in 2008, taking over from a family friend who had owned it after her mother stepped away. The Merle Norman brand was founded by the late Merle Norman in California and has been part of the Owensboro community for nearly 75 years.

“This has been one of the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences of my life,” Abney said. “After careful consideration, I’ve decided it’s time for me to make a change.”

The studio, located at 2785 Veach Road in Williamsburg Square, has moved several times over the years. It originally opened downtown before relocating to Emory Drive, Towne Square Mall, and its current location.

Abney emphasized that she is working closely with Merle Norman’s corporate office to find a new owner and that she hopes the next franchisee will continue serving her loyal customer base. She said the opportunity is ideal for someone seeking a turnkey cosmetic business, noting the franchise requires no initial or ongoing royalty fees, making it affordable to start.

“I’m motivated to sell and have priced the business accordingly,” Abney said. “Most successful franchise owners actually started as loyal customers themselves.”

Though stepping away from the cosmetic business, Abney said she will continue working in the beauty industry by providing nail services at a different location.
