Primal Craft Dogz, a new food truck specializing in innovative hot dog creations, launched in Owensboro and surrounding areas earlier this year.
Owner Aaron Wiedeman, who runs the food truck alongside his wife Brittany and their son Cameron, said the business launched in late July. Initially, the truck was intended to serve barbecue, but logistical challenges led them to pivot to gourmet hot dogs.
Cameron’s ultimate goal is to make the hot dogs “Instagramable.” So, they began experimenting with unique toppings and presentations.
“At first, we thought we’d do a barbecue truck since I had experience competing in barbecue contests, but it was tough fitting everything into the trailer,” Wiedeman said. “Our friend Julius Maddox suggested hot dogs, and after some thought, we decided to give it a shot.”
The hot dog options range from classics to creative monthly specials. Regular items include a Chicago dog, a barbecue dog with baked beans, coleslaw, crispy onions, and house-made barbecue sauce, and a Southwest dog with queso and cilantro-lime slaw. Primal Craft Dogz also features rotating monthly specials, including the popular “peanut butter and jelly dog” and this month’s “ratchet dog” with Flaming Hot Cheetos, crispy jalapenos, and spicy queso.
“We try to offer something different with every dog,” Wiedeman said. “The goal is to make them big and bold, with flavors and toppings that really stand out.”
Primal Craft Dogz has gained a local following, often serving at events around Daviess County and nearby areas. Upcoming stops include the Fordsville Fire Department on Monday, Bluegrass Commons in the evening, and then locations in Deer Valley throughout the week.
“We’re grateful for the support we’ve received so far,” Wiedeman said. “Social media has really helped us reach more people, and we’re excited to keep bringing our hot dogs to new places.”
