Local runners and marathon enthusiasts will soon have an opportunity to qualify for some of the nation’s most prominent marathons with a race in Daviess County. The RYR Endurance Race Weekend is set for November 16-17 and features a plethora of distance and race options.
Organized by Owensboro residents and endurance coaches Paula and Dean Roberts, the event includes a full range of races, from a family-friendly 5K to a competitive marathon with Boston Marathon qualification potential.
The Roberts are on a journey to complete marathons in all 50 states and launched the RYR Endurance Team in 2019 to bring the thrill of marathon and triathlon training to Owensboro.
“We’re excited to host an event of this caliber here in Owensboro,” Dean said. “We wanted to give local athletes a chance to accomplish great things right here.”
All six races will begin and end at Horse Fork Creek Park, looping through Owensboro’s Greenbelt Trail. Options include a 5K, 10K, half marathon, and even a 50K for those looking to push their limits.
The marathon course spans nine loops and is both accessible for spectators and accommodating for runners. According to Paula Roberts, the design minimizes disruption to the city while offering plenty of vantage points for supporters.
“This setup really lets friends and family cheer on their runners multiple times throughout the race,” she said.
The event’s highlight is its USATF certification, meaning runners can use their results to qualify for prestigious events such as the Boston, New York City, and Chicago marathons.
“To qualify for Boston, you usually have to travel. This certification changes that for local runners,” Paula said.
For those not enticed by time limits, the event also includes a “casual” marathon and 50K, allowing participants up to 11 hours to finish. Additionally, runners can register for multiple races, and options to run, walk, or “ruck” are available, with the latter involving walking with a weighted pack.
Registration and race-day details
Race swag, including shirts and quarter-zip jackets, is available for those registered by the end of the day on October 30. Volunteers are needed to help manage the course, and local entertainers are encouraged to join, adding music, dance, and energy along the route.
RYR Endurance is also seeking individuals interested in cheering and offering encouragement to racers at various stations.
Race sponsors include Fastek, Cargill, and Legends.
“Our amazing sponsors have been instrumental in bringing this weekend to life,” Paula said.
Any proceeds from the event will benefit Wendell Foster, a nonprofit serving people with disabilities, and participants also have the option to donate to My Sister’s Keeper, a local women’s shelter.
“Owensboro has a strong running community, and this event is for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or just looking to join a 5K,” Dean said. “We want locals to take advantage of this unique opportunity.”
