Community members came together on Saturday to participate in the local 2024 Walk to End Alzheimer’s, raising more than $53,000 to support the Alzheimer’s Association’s programs for care, support, and research.
“We sincerely thank the many dedicated participants, volunteers, and sponsors who made the 2024 Walk to End Alzheimer’s a tremendous success,” said Megan Irish, Owensboro Walk Manager. “The funds raised will stay local to help fuel disease research while also providing critical care and support to individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementia.”
Held at Smothers Park, the event saw nearly 300 participants come out to support the cause. The top fundraising team, Purple Haze, raised $3,696, surpassing their original goal of $3,400. Team captain Laurel Murphy walked in honor of her mother, Bobbie Beaty, who died 10 years ago at 66 after battling the disease. Murphy was also named the 2024 Owensboro Top Participant.
“On August 26, 2014, I lost my mom to this awful disease at the age of 66,” Murphy said. “As her full-time caregiver, I witnessed firsthand how devastating Alzheimer’s really is. That’s why we have to fight for a cure.”
The local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is still accepting donations to meet its overall goal of $125,000. The funds will support ongoing research efforts as well as provide vital care for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.
Nearly 7 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease, a leading cause of death in the U.S. In Kentucky alone, more than 80,500 people have been diagnosed with the disease, and over 157,000 caregivers provide support to loved ones, according to a release.
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. Since its inception in 1989, millions of Americans have participated in the walk, helping to advance the fight against this devastating disease.
