Owensboro Memorial Gardens and Glenn Family Services are partnering for their annual Wreaths Across America remembrance event, with a goal of getting 1,755 wreaths sponsored this year.
Sponsors can choose a specific gravesite for their wreath to be placed on, or they can let organizers place it at random. Those interested in sponsoring a wreath can click here. Wreaths cost $17 individually or are available at discounted prices for multiple wreaths.
During a ceremony at 11 a.m. on December 14, organizers will honor all veterans buried at the Owensboro Memorial Gardens by reading their names.
“We believe it is our duty to honor the sacrifices of the brave men and women resting in the Gardens and ensure their legacy is remembered by future generations,” said Rachael Taylor with Glenn Family Services. “By continuing this event, it allows our community to come together in gratitude and reflection and reaffirms our community’s commitment to supporting veterans and their families.”
County Clerk Leslie McCarty has partnered with the two groups for years. She is excited to continue promoting the initiative, saying it’s important to share the stories of those who served.
“It’s just special to me since my dad served as a marine during the Vietnam era. I owe him and all veterans thanks because without them, I wouldn’t be where I am,” she said. “They paved the way for us to do what we do every day and not take freedom for granted. I feel like we owe them a lot of gratitude.”
