Beverly’s Heartly Slice is expanding its services to a fourth location: Colony Mobile Estates. The new distribution site will begin serving the community on November 1, just in time for the organization’s Thanksgiving and Christmas events.
Travis Owsley, founder and executive director of Beverly’s Hearty Slice, said the decision to add a new location was driven by the significant need in the area.
“We saw there was a need in that part of the county,” Owsley said. “After hearing from residents and visiting the area, it was clear there was a real opportunity to help. With some generous donations, we decided to make it happen.”
In addition to adding a new distribution site, Beverly’s Hearty Slice will host an event on September 27 in collaboration with Owensboro Municipal Utilities (OMU). The organization will distribute 100 OMU gift cards, each worth $30. The event will run from 5:30-7 p.m., with an assembly line set up to provide gift cards, Little Caesars pizza, hygiene bags, and other resources.
“We’re working with Audubon Area Community Services, kynect, and other partners to offer a range of services,” Owsley said. “They’ll be on-site helping families sign up for Medicaid, health plans, and SNAP benefits. We want to connect people to the resources they need.”
The OMU event is part of Beverly’s Hearty Slice’s ongoing efforts to serve the community every other Friday, regardless of the weather. Owsley said the nonprofit provides meals, drinks, and essential items to local families 26 times a year — rain, snow, or shine.
“We get so many messages from people asking for help with things we don’t directly provide,” Owsley added. “That’s why we try to collaborate with other organizations, bringing everyone together to support these families.”
Looking ahead, the nonprofit is also planning a Halloween event on October 18, featuring free costumes, candy, face painting, and other activities to ensure every child is prepared for the upcoming Halloween festivities. They’re partnering with Halloween Havoc on the event.
“We just want to make sure all the kids have what they need to enjoy the holiday,” Owsley said.
