Tyrell Garnett followed his passion and launched TJ’s BBQ and Catering earlier this year. Garnett said he considers himself a pitmaster and enjoys offering a diverse range of meats, sides, and more.

“We operate a lot like a food truck, but we’re more of a pop-up vendor,” Garnett said. “We offer catering for all kinds of events and will set up a location similar to a food truck but with a tent. I’m eventually going to convert to a food truck, but right now, it’s just pop-up barbecue and catering.”

Garnett said he’s already catered everything from weddings to sporting events and is open to anything.

Garnett has spent most of his career in construction, but cooking has always been his passion. After several years, he decided to make it his full-time job.

“I wanted to wake up and cook versus doing something I don’t really enjoy,” he said. “I’ve been cooking since I was a kid and learned a lot over the years. I would burn something early on, but over the years, I’ve continued to improve.”

He recalls being in college and cooking for everyone in his hall. They had a shared kitchen for all the rooms, and he often cooked feasts for everyone on special occasions.

Garnett has already successfully conducted luncheons at Glenmore, Owensboro Grain, and Kimberly-Clark. He’s also done neighborhood pop-ups in Deer Valley and Brookfield.

“Over the last 10 years, I’ve gotten pretty good, and people kept telling me to go out and try to do this,” he said. “I’m just now getting the courage to do it.”
